The Phantom Girl of Sunset Avenue

The Phantom Girl of Sunset Avenue
By Kim Carter

Elizabeth Shelley felt a chill go down her spine. Ever since she and her familyhad moved to the new house on Sunset Avenue, she felt a chilling feeling wherever she went. She couldn't explain it.
Her parents, Melinda and Jake, and her brother, Marvin, thought she was being silly. They didn't believe in such things. But Elizabeth was sure something was in the house. She turned and screamed at what she believed was a face in the mirror.
It was a little girl. She had pale skin and was dressed in a shabby white dress. She looked like she was seven. She had shiny green eyes and brown hair.
Her parents and Marvin came running. When asked what was wrong, she explained she had seen a face in the mirror. Her parents and Marvin grumbled and went back downstairs. Elizabeth knew she wasn't crazy, she really had seen a face.
She decided to look up the history of the house. She was horrified at what she read.
Apparently one of the richest families in Illinois and they used to live in the house and they had a little girl named Emily who had died from scarlet fever there. Soon afterward, her parents moved out but Emily did not. Emily was not an evil spirit. She tried to make the new families feel welcome but were always driven out because they did not know what was going on.
Elizabeth felt sorry for Emily. Elizabeth took one of her old dolls and laid it on her bed with a note that said FOR EMILY. Elizabeth left and came back an hour later.
The doll was gone.
Elizabeth wanted to make sure Emily was welcome and didn't need to be afraid of her.
Elizabeth never saw the doll again.

Curse

Curse
By Kim Carter

Sandy Taylor knew there was something wrong with the house as soon as she saw it. She couldn't put her finger on it but something seemed amiss.
It stood tall and domineering. The doors were old and the windows looked liked evil eyes. A chimney stood in the center of the two back windows. Sandy got chills.
Sandy's parents, Mira and Charlie, on the other hand, loved it. To them, it was perfect. Sandy had moved from Colorado to Alaska because of her dad's job. Her dad was some sort of businessman. To Sandy, Alaska seemed to be in another universe.
Sandy went inside and the inside seemed just as creepy. According to Charlie, the house was built in the 1880s and had been lived in by many different famous people.
Sandy didn't care. She wanted to be anywhere but here. But she figured she better make the best of it. She helped carry in boxes. She and her parents ate at a local restaurant.
Later that night, Sandy had a nightmare. She was herself but not quite. She was dressed in 1880s style dress. She had an axe in her hand. She was hacking some boy to pieces. She woke up with a start.
Later, when she went to school. She made a friend named Courntey Murdoch. Sandy told Courtney about her house. Courtney said Sandy lived in the Gateman House. Courtney explained everything.
Eli Gateman lived in Alaska from 1886-1906. In 1890, he began to commit a string of grisly murders. Each more twisted and bizaare than the last. The reasons for why he did this are unknown. Rumors circulated everywhere. It was said he killed his victims in a room upstairs and then hid the bodies. No one ever found the axe. Then he placed a curse on the house. Whoever found the axe would be doomed to repeat his mistakes.
Sandy knew there had been something wrong with her house the moment she saw it. Then something horrified her. She had seen a red spot on her floor that looked liked blood. Everyone know's you can't wash off blood. As for the curse, Sandy didn't believe in curses. She knew there was no such thing.
When Sandy got home from school, she went up to her bedroom. She was certain the red spot was blood. She put her hand on it. The floorboard was loose. She opened it. She stared at what she saw.
The axe.
She wondered how it had been there for all these years. She picked it up. She could feel some sort of surge going through her.
She had never wanted to move here. It was her dumb parents idea. She was sixteen, she didn't need them.
She was going to get rid of them once and for all.
